This is going to be a photo-heavy post I’ll have more thoughts and reflections to share again soon, but for now here is a glimpse into our Christmas celebrations!
We began at home, just Matt, Miranda, and me, enjoying an evening together and giving gifts to each other.
Then we all headed north. My big Christmas present to Matt this year was that I coordinated a personal retreat for him at a friend’s lakehouse – 4 days and 3 nights for him to enjoy by himself, just being quiet, reading books, playing with legos, taking walks – whatever else he wanted to do. While he was gone, Miranda and I took a brief trip to Chicagoland to visit some friends. Here’s Miranda playing piano with my good friend, Sheri. She told Sheri that she was playing the “boy sounds” and Sheri was playing the “girl sounds.”
We were also able to go to my company’s Christmas party for the first time in several years! My friend and colleague Emily was kind enough to bowl a few frames with Miranda!
After our brief visit to Chicagoland, we returned to my mom’s house in Wisconsin. This was the first year Miranda was old enough to help out with the baking part of our cut-out-cookie-making tradition.
She had so much fun that she helped my brother Danny work on making a cheese torte later in the day!
And then that evening we frosted the cookies we had baked that morning.
On Christmas morning Miranda enjoyed some snuggling time with Grandma.
Then the present-opening commenced! Matt was thrilled with his new lego set.
And Danny received one of Matt’s artworks to hang in his office.
My dad got Miranda a set of musical instruments, and she serenaded us all (multiple times) with her rendition of I’ll Fly Away - still far and away her favorite song.
And my mom passed on a gift from a friend of hers to us - a hand-knitted blanket for our little Madeleine CaiQun. It’s the first gift we’ve received specifically for our new little one! So sweet!
One gift that has proved to be highly entertaining for all members of our family (except Miranda – we wait until she’s asleep to break this one out!) has been Danny’s growing collection of games for his Xbox Kinect.
There’s something about the stillness, dark, and cold that always draws me in to reflect on the wonder of Jesus, fully God, entering into space and time to be born as a baby and live in our broken world.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas celebrating Jesus’s incarnation!
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” (Philippians 2:5-7 ESV)
